RLN Pneumatic Rod Lock | NFPA (inch)

Fail-Safe Locking for NFPA-Standard Pneumatic Cylinders

The AMLOK RLN Series delivers reliable pneumatic rod locking designed specifically for NFPA-standard (inch-sized) pneumatic cylinders. Utilizing a robust spring-engaged, air-released mechanism, the RLN automatically clamps the cylinder rod in the event of air pressure loss, ensuring safety and precision positioning without drift or unintended movement.

Key Benefits:

  • Instant Precision Locking | Holds rod position within 0.002–0.003″ and engages in approximately 100 milliseconds.
  • Fail-Safe Operation | Spring-driven clamp automatically engages if air pressure is lost, ensuring safety.
  • Dual-Directional Force | Provides consistent holding in both push and pull directions.
  • Compact NFPA Integration | Mounts directly onto standard NFPA cylinders—no extensive modifications required.
  • Durable Construction | One-piece, industrial-grade housing designed for long-lasting reliability.

Technical Overview

The RLN Series employs a robust spring-driven clamping mechanism to automatically secure the cylinder rod upon loss of pneumatic pressure. A built-in pneumatic piston releases the clamp when air pressure returns, delivering consistent, fail-safe holding with minimal backlash. Designed specifically for NFPA-standard pneumatic cylinders, the RLN provides reliable safety and precise positioning control.

Available Options

You can configure the RLN Series rod locks with optional features to meet special requirements:

  • Material & Plating Choices | For enhanced corrosion resistance, RLN locks can be made with stainless steel components or given a nickel-plated finish. These options are ideal for outdoor use or corrosive environments where standard steel might degrade.
  • Seal Upgrades | Viton seals (and other specialized seal materials) are available for higher temperature operation or exposure to chemicals that might attack standard seals. This ensures the lock maintains performance in extreme conditions.
  • Environmental Sealing | Wipers/Scrapers can be installed on the rod entry points to keep contaminants out, particularly useful in abrasive dust or slurry environments. Additionally, a fully sealed variant can be provided for applications like food processing or pharmaceutical manufacturing, where ingress of contaminants or washdown fluids must be prevented.

Note: The RLI and RLN series share similar options and internal components. The key difference is their mounting interface—RLI is designed for metric cylinders, while RLN fits inch-standard NFPA cylinders.

Common Applications

The RLN Series is utilized in a breadth of pneumatic cylinder applications, particularly in North America where NFPA-standard cylinders are prevalent. Examples include:

  • Automotive Assembly & Machinery
  • Manufacturing Presses (Air-Powered)
  • Packaging & Processing Equipment
  • Robotics & Gantry Systems
  • Woodworking and Glass Machinery
  • Elevating Work Platforms (Air Lifted)
  • General Industrial Machinery

The RLN provides peace of mind for any inch-standard pneumatic system where uncontrolled movement must be prevented. Its automatic engagement on pressure loss makes it a smart safety upgrade or design inclusion for a vast array of equipment.
